Reading Football Club are pleased to announce that left-footed defender Clinton Mola has dried the ink on a one-year deal with the Royals.

Mola came through the Academy at Chelsea, playing alongside the likes of Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Marc Guehi, Tariq Lamptey and Billy Gilmour amongst many others emerging from the Stamford Bridge ranks.

At the age of 18, Mola moved to Germany in January 2020 to sign a three-and-a-half-year deal with VfB Stuttgart.

The Camden-born youngster was given the no.6 shirt at his new club and made his debut at Bayer Leverkusen in the cup the following month.

Having been part of the first team squad on a number of occasions, Mola made his Bundesliga debut against Hoffenheim in October 2021.

Following a substitute appearance in a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig, Mola returned to England on loan to Blackburn Rovers. Featuring six times in the first half of Rovers’ Championship campaign, including a Carabao Cup win over West Ham at the London Stadium, Mola ended the season getting regular minutes in the Premier League 2 for the Ewood Park outfit’s Under-21s.

On the international front, Mola has represented England at a number of youth levels, captaining his country at Under-19 level and most recently representing the Three Lions’ Under-21s against Georgia in November 2021.

Following the end of his contract in Germany, Mola has now opted to put pen to paper on a contract with Ruben Selles’ Royals which will run until the summer of 2024.

Head of Football Operations, Mark Bowen, said: “A left-sided player who is capable of playing in either a holding midfield role or as part of the back line, Clinton has an opportunity to earn consistent first team football at Reading. He has the ability to make a real impact as a Royal this season and I look forward to following his progress.”

Clinton is expected to take squad no.2. The transfer remains subject to the normal ratification procedures from the relevant football authorities.
