Midfielder reflects on away win over former club

Saturday's win over Wycombe Wanderers caused a great variety of feelings, not least jubliation and relief.

This certainly applies to goalscorer Lewis Wing, whose 41st minute effort against the club he spent 18 months at proved to be the winner.

He said: "I thought I wasn’t going to celebrate today if I scored but because they were giving me a bit of grief I thought I would give it to them back, and I’m buzzing.

"I don’t care how it went in as long as it goes in, it got us the win at the end of the day, it was the first one in a while, so it was a nice one.

"I have forgot the feeling of winning away from home, it was certainly a good one.

"It was one we can bottle up and take into the next away game. It was a good feeling and I feel like we deserved the win, and hopefully we can kick on now.

"I don’t care how it went in as long as it goes in, it got us the win at the end of the day, it was the first one in a while, so it was a nice one.

"I think in recent weeks we have been doing well in games but we just haven’t been able to see the goal out so doing it today was fantastic.

"I really don’t know what changed from previous games, it is a hard one to answer.

"Obviously because it has been over a year now there has been a stigma around that, and now we have overcome that it will give us the confidence to go and win more games.

"When you haven’t won away from home for that period in time it just feels fantastic."

The first away league win of the 2023-24 season came about due to several fantastic performances all across the board.

Wing's showing in midfield certainly falls into this category, as well as that of Femi Azeez, and the fans in the sold-out away end.

He continued: "It was a really good team performance today, we grinded it out.

"You know what happens in recent weeks when it gets to those last ten minutes we have not been able to see it, so today we showed the character and what we are really about.

"The fans were our twelfth man today. They were fantastic, and they have been fantastic all season and I am just glad we could repay them today, and get the win for them.

"They were brilliant, and I hope they enjoyed the win, and hopefully we can have many more.

"I know Femi has been down, he has been performing but he has not been getting the goals and assists that he probably deserves.

"Today he did fantastic, so when he was coming off there I said brilliant, that’s what you need to do from now on, and hopefully that will give him the confidence to kick on and get more.

"We didn’t know what that feeling is like so it is important that we bottle it up and take it into the next couple of games.

"Hopefully we can get another win! I am just glad the games are coming thick and fast because when you get a win you want to keep the momentum going, so onto Tuesday now.

"We have got the players, we know we can perform and beat anyone in this league so it is just about replaying that and doing it again on Tuesday."
