Icelandic international extends deal and heads up North

We’re very pleased to announce that 21-year-old goalkeeper Jokull Andresson has signed a contract extension, which will see him remain at the club until 2025.

With his future secured, the Academy graduate will continue his development by spending this season on loan at fellow League One side Carlisle United.

This spell will offer the Icelandic goalkeeper the opportunity to earn valuable time between the sticks in a competitive league, having played in this division previously with Exeter City and Morecambe.

He first signed professional terms with the Royals on his 17th birthday in 2018, before gaining experience in the first half of the 2018-19 season with Hungerford Town in the National League South.

Jokull made an initial emergency seven-day loan to Exeter City in League Two in October 2020, which was extended on a weekly basis until the end of November after the ‘keeper impressed then-manager Matt Taylor.

He earned more professional minutes as emergency cover for Morecambe in January 2021, where he managed two clean sheets from his two games.

Such was his positive influence on the two clubs that he returned to both, earning his place as Exeter’s number one for the remainder of the 2020-21 season. He returned to the Shrimps in 2021-22, where he made 13 appearances in the team’s first ever campaign in League One.

Last season saw another emergency loan to the Grecians, as well as three appearances on loan at Stevenage as the side earned promotion to the third tier.

Andresson represented Iceland at the under-17, under-19, and under-21 levels, before making his senior international debut in January 2022 against Uganda.

Mark Bowen, Head of Football Operations, said: “We were extremely pleased to be able to extend Jokull’s contract – he has been at the club for a long time and is very popular amongst the players and the coaches for both his attitude and personality.

“This loan move offers him the perfect opportunity to further hone his skills and stake a claim for a starting place in this division. We want him to gain the necessary experience this season to be able to come back and compete for the number one spot at Reading.”
