The Opposition
Coventry City had a slow start to the 2022-23 season, with postponed matches due to an unplayable pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and some patchy form before the FIFA World Cup break in mid-November.
But the Sky Blues have been flying high since then. Following Reading’s 1-0 victory over Coventry City, the West Midlands outfit have lost just four of their last 22 games – sitting just one point below the playoff positions.
Mark Robins’ side are an aggressive, front-footed side who favour a 3-5-2 shape in possession of the ball. Coventry have the fifth best defensive record in the league, conceding only 44 goals in 43 games this season.

One to watch: Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres has been crucial to Coventry City’s form this season. The Swede has already scored 18 league goals this season, scoring 17 for the Sky Blues last season.
Gyokeres is of the utmost importance to Coventry’s success – particularly while Mark Robins’ side are without key midfielder Callum O’Hare, who was ruled out for at least the rest of the season with a knee injury in December.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion man joined on a permanent deal ahead of the 2021-22 season. Only Championship top scorer Chuba Akpom has scored more goals than Gyokeres this season.

Head-to-Head
Reading won the reverse fixture at the Select Car Leasing Stadium 1-0 – with Amadou Mbengue’s headed effort the difference between the two sides in the first game after the World Cup break.
Away trips to Coventry City have proved trickier in recent fixtures, with the Royals only managing one win in their last five trips to the Sky Blues. That singular win came in October 2009 - courtesy of Jobi McAnuff’s first goal for the club, as well as a Grzegorz Rasiak double.
Last season’s trip to Coventry was memorable for all the wrong reasons. The Royals led through a John Swift penalty in the first half, before the hosts fashioned an equaliser and then a late winner from Matt Godden.

Ref Watch
Matthew Donohue is the referee for Saturday’s clash with Coventry City. The official from Greater Manchester has taken charge of 11 Reading games throughout his career, with the Royals winning just three.
Donohue refereed the reverse fixture in RG2, where the Royals won 1-0 and the official showed five yellow cards throughout the match.
Paul Hodskinson and Matthew Smith will be running the line for the Coventry match, while Craig Hicks will be the fourth official.
