All at Reading Football Club are saddened to learn of the passing of former inside right, Jimmy Whitehouse, at the age of 87.

Born in September 1934, Jimmy started his career as an amateur at West Bromwich Albion before leaving the Baggies to arrive at Reading in 1956, making the switch for a reported fee of £250.

A tall, blond, skillful and classy inside right, Whitehouse soon became a permanent fixture in the Reading side under manager Harry Johnstone.

Jimmy is probably best remembered as the creator of chances for his colleagues, particularly his old friend Jimmy Wheeler with whom he seemed to have such a great understanding. However Jimmy was also a regular goalscorer himself, averaging nearly a goal every three games with a record of 67 goals in 227 appearances for the club.

Whitehouse proved such a popular player with the Elm Park crowd, but he left the club to join Coventry City in 1962 - playing 58 games and scoring 19 goals to help City win promotion from Division Three as champions in 1963-64 before a move to Millwall.

He played less than a season in London before moving into non-League football with first Hillingdon Borough and later Hastings United and Andover.

The thoughts of everyone at Reading Football Club are with the family and friends of Jimmy Whitehouse.
