Our first summer signing shares his thoughts

New Royals ‘keeper Joe Lumley says he can’t wait to get going as he looks ahead to 2022-23 in Berkshire.

Signed on a season-long loan from Middlesbrough, Lumley spoke of his joy at getting the move over the line to join our squad, with the pre-season schedule set to start this week.

“I am delighted to join, growing up playing against Reading it is a massive club to come and join and hopefully we can achieve some good stuff this season,” said Lumley.

“I heard Reading were interested at the end of last season and straight away I jumped at the chance as it is chance to play another season in a top league and to see what we can do.

“It is a top club with some top players and a great manager. Everything about this club has been great, and it is a great opportunity for me as I want to play 46 games in the Championship this year and do well for the team.”

Well versed in the rigours of the Championship, Lumley spoke of his experience in the division and facing Reading as he managed to slip in an unusual moment from the last campaign.

“It is always a tough game coming to Reading and I can’t wait to get going," he continued.

“Playing last season for Middlesbrough against Reading, both were very tough games. And in the away game at Reading I should have scored in the last minute!

“It is a tough league. but it is all just part and parcel of it all... and I can’t wait to get going for pre-season to get to know the lads, the staff and everyone at the club as it is a massive season and we want to see what we can do."

The 27-year-old also gave Royals fans a hint of things to come as he described his playing style and what he is like on the pitch, as well as discussing how he's used the summer break and his first impressions of his new surroundings at Bearwood.

“I am a big goalie and like to dominate my box and show a good presence. I feel like I organise very well, offer really good communication and I can make big saves for the team - match-winning saves - which is vital for a goalie and points for the team.

“I've kept myself ticking over during summer, and I’m sure all players have done the same - we get given a programme and we got to stick to it. I feel great, I feel strong, I feel fit, I feel healthy and can’t wait to get going.

“It is an unbelievable training ground, I got showed around earlier. I remember my days playing for QPR youth team and Tottenham back in the day at the old training ground - but this is amazing! I can’t wait to come here everyday and improve my game.

“Football is crazy, you are one place one year and another the next, but it is all part of your career and I love a new challenge.

“As they say one door closes, another one opens and I am raring to go, to meet the lads, to work hard in pre-season and be ready for the season.”

Finally, Lumley expressed his ambitions for the season and is looking forward to seeing what the team can do out on the pitch in the Championship next year.

“If any player doesn’t want to play 46 games a season, then there is something wrong!

“I will do my absolute best every day in training, I believe in myself, I believe in my ability and through speaking to people at the club I feel like we can achieve something at this club this season.”
