It was an opportunity to get 45 minutes under the belts of a lot of first team players. It was an opportunity to return to action for the first time since a trip to Kenilworth Road nearly two months ago. It was an opportunity to assess who might fit and where as Paul Ince shapes his side for 2022-23.

And the Royals took the opportunity to earn a 2-0 win over League Two Colchester United and register a clean sheet at Bearwood Park on Saturday.
