Left-back to leave RG2 and join German giants this summer
Reading Football Club can confirm that 23-year-old left-back Omar Richards is set to sign for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich when his contract with the Royals comes to an end this summer.
Omar joined our Academy ranks in 2014 and made his first team debut for Reading on the opening day of our 2017-18 campaign, coming off the bench in a 2-0 defeat at Loftus Road.
That substitute appearance saw him become the 42nd Academy graduate to break into the first team – since that afternoon in West London there have been 24 more who have made the transition into the senior side at Reading.
Richards went on to make 89 starts as a Royal, scoring three times across a period of four years as part of the senior squad at Reading. Last month, he made his 100th appearance for the club in a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City at the Madejski.
Richards was offered a new contract at the club but he has opted to follow in the footsteps of another of our most successful Academy products, Gylfi Sigurdsson, in making the move to the German top flight to continue his career at the Allianz Arena with the six-time European Cup champions.
We would like to wish Omar the very best of luck in this next step in his career.
