Unveiled | Our Simod-inspired anniversary away kit

In tribute to our 1988 Wembley win, our 2021-22 away strip has been designed to honour that cup final win.

In iconic yellow we lifted the cup, our trophy cabinet a little less bare,
33 years on, our 150  milestone we mark and the glory we’d like to reshare.
Gilkes then Beavon, Tait and Smillie, Hatters mad as underdogs prevailed,
Silverware ours, quite a Wembley Way day. And in tribute, our away kit… unveiled!

Footage of those four goals and photos of the celebrations at the old Wembley back in March 1988 remain so vivid in many Royals fans memories.

And that yellow and blue shirt became one of our most treasured away strips. So, with help from kit manufacturers Macron, we designed our 2021-22 away strip to honour that famous cup final win.

Sporting the same colours as our Simod Cup winners, our home shirt has ‘1871-2021: 150 Years’ embroidered on the back. The shorts feature an elasticated waistband with a white pull cord – just as Hicks, Curle, Richardson and Beavon donned for that win over First Division Luton Town.

The socks have navy tops and fans will be able to order name and number shirt printing available in bespoke navy to match the 1988 strip.

This special anniversary away kit is a nod to the greats of ’88.

Neither Rafael, Tom McIntyre, Yakou Meite nor Josh Laurent were fortunate enough to be alive when we won at Wembley! But all four were taken back to the eighties as they modelled the new yellow away strip whilst tackling a Rubik’s cube and listening to their ghetto blaster.

While they waited, goalkeeper Grace Moloney and midfielder Brooke Chaplen thumbed through the March 1988 issue of Smash Hits whilst listening to their walkman, before joining the men for photos in this special 150th anniversary season away strip.

We start our season away from home at Stoke on Saturday 7th August, 3pm kick-off. And the away kit is available to buy online and in the Fanstore NOW!

And don’t forget, our new hoops are also on sale for the 150th anniversary season. And we host Swansea City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday 10th August before kicking off our Select Car Leasing Stadium league campaign against Preston on Saturday 14th August, 3pm kick-off.
