Academy graduate makes permanent move to the Memorial Stadium
Reading Football Club can announce that midfielder Josh Barrett has completed a permanent move away from Madejski Stadium to join League One side Bristol Rovers.
Barrett, who will turn 22 this year, came through our Academy ranks to make his first team debut for the Royals under Brian McDermott in March 2016 – aged just 17 he came off the bench in the latter stages of a league defeat at Huddersfield Town.
His full first team debut followed at the end of that season at Ewood Park and the Republic of Ireland youth international impressed at Under-23 level during the next few seasons whilst also earning regular first team football in loan spells with Coventry City in League Two and Aldershot Town in the National League.
His return to the Reading side came towards the end of last season once Championship safety had been secured under José Gomes and, having bagged a fine goal against Chelsea in pre-season, he scored twice in a 4-2 Carabao Cup win at Plymouth at the start of 2019-20.
His last appearance for the Royals came as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City at the start of October, taking his appearance record to 7(+6) in blue and white hoops.
Everyone at Reading Football Club would like to thank Josh for his hard work and commitment as a Reading player and wish him the very best of luck at Rovers and in his future career.
