Defensive midfielder Charlie Wellens followed in the footsteps of Charlie Savage, swapping Old Trafford for RG2 in the summer of 2023.

The son of former Blackpool, Doncaster Rovers, Oldham Athletic and Leicester City midfielder and current Leyton Orient boss Richie Wellens, Charlie followed in his father’s footsteps to cut his teeth in Manchester United’s youth set-up.

The 20-year-old earned his first taste of first team football in the 2022-23 season during a loan spell at another of his dad’s former clubs, Oldham, playing six times and scoring an 89^th minute winner against Eastleigh to open his professional account in a 3-2 home win.

Wellens made his first appearance for Noel Hunt's Under-21s in the 3-0 away defeat against Arsenal.
