A commanding and experienced goalkeeper, Joe had played over 160 matches in the Football League when he became the Royals first signing of the 2022-23 season, joining on a season-long loan from fellow Championship club Middlesbrough.

Lumley was scouted for Tottenham Hotspur before moving across the capital to Queens Park Rangers at the age of 16, making his senior debut whilst out on loan at Hertfordshire side Bishop’s Stortford in 2014.

His Football League debut came the following campaign whilst with Accrington Stanley, whilst also spending time in the North West with Morecambe during 2014-15.

The next season saw Lumley make a another temporary switch, this time to Stevenage, before making his Rangers debut in an FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest and making his league debut days later in a draw with Blackburn Rovers.

Having spent the second half of 2016-17 at Bristol Rovers and 2017-18 with Blackpool, both in League One, he made the R's number one jersey his own in 2018-19 and began the season with three successive clean sheets. Over the campaign  he kept an impressive 16 shut outs.

After being QPR's regular stopper in 2019-20, the following year saw Lumley go out on loan again, featuring for Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers, prior to heading to Teesside upon the expiry of his contract in summer 2021.

Signed by former QPR boss Neil Warnock, Lumley made 39 appearances in his first season at the Riverside as they finished seventh, whilst also tending the net in their run to the FA Cup sixth round - helping Boro knock out Manchester United on penalties at Old Trafford, before an extra time win over Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Following the completion of the 2021-22 campaign, Lumley headed to Berkshire to become Paul Ince’s first signing of the summer, joining on loan from the manager's former side Boro.
