Gilbert assesses Royals' loss to Sheffield United

Reading were yet again made to pay for missed chances, as The Blades ran out 3-1 winners in RG2 on Sunday afternoon.

Following the game, the Royals manager praised his team's commitment to the end, but reiterated that accountability must be taken if the team is the improve after the international break.

"Things just didn't fall into place today; two mistakes led to two goals, plain and simple. Once you're chasing the game after that, even though it was good to see the girls still pressing for a late goal, the match was already beyond us."

Gilbert expressed his frustration as Sheffield took the lead following a positive spell from Reading. "The most disappointing aspect was that we began the game with some really positive passages of play, moving the ball well.

"A momentary lapse in concentration and execution gifted them a goal, and the way the second half started put us in an uphill struggle."

Despite the result, Gilbert lauded his players and acknowledged their tenacious work rate this season. "Even with the result, the girls' attitude was impeccable.

"They don't quit on each other, they work tirelessly as a unit. While some accountability must be taken, their perseverance is commendable.

"Every player has been exceptional, but effort alone doesn't guarantee three points. We must rebuild our cohesion to navigate through the season."

With the international break underway, Gilbert seeks greater consistency and continuity from the team when they return. "Without making excuses, this is the first time this season we've been able to field the same starting line-up in back-to-back matches, and that's a factor, I believe.

"We're losing eight players to the international break, and they will remain active with their respective nations. As for those who aren't, it provides our coaching staff with the opportunity to delve into details on a larger scale, given the additional time and fewer players."

Looking forward, Gilbert remains optimistic as he prepares for the November clash against Birmingham. "We have plenty to examine, and we'll continue to build and improve. We want to reach a point where we can confidently say, 'This is where we want to be,' and exhibit the style of football we know we're capable of playing.

"Our squad boasts some fantastic players, and there's a great dynamic between the experienced and younger players that can bolster the team in games like these. The club provides an excellent environment for these players to grow and develop, and I believe they can achieve a lot.

"Right now, it's about focusing on ourselves during the international break, returning to the drawing board, and ensuring we are as well-prepared as possible for the Birmingham game because we know it will be a formidable challenge."
