Summer signing Jackie Burns put on a WSL debut to remember against Arsenal on Sunday evening.

She was called into action in the opening minute, with a superb low save to deny Beth Mead’s low shot heading towards the far post, which set the tone for what was to come producing a number of fine saves including a penalty stop to keep the game in the balance.

Looking back on the game, Burns was keen to praise her teammates for a high level performance, and was confident that with consistency, results will soon change in their favour.

“I think you saw from our faces when we came off on Sunday, we were a bit disappointed as we all felt we put everything into the game, and was just unfortunate to not come away with anything.

“Despite the quick turnaround with players arriving back from Internationals, we all prepared well, positive we could put in a performance like we did, but we were just unfortunate we couldn’t get on the scoresheet and get a point.

“The performance will definitely breathe new belief into us, I think you saw it against Tottenham in the cup, our level of performance was better against a top quality opponent and again unlucky to not take anything from the game.

“So on the whole, despite the loss, it’s a positive result and I have no doubt our fortunes will change.

“Obviously today for me personally was a great achievement, my first WSL start coming off the back of my debut a couple of weeks ago.

“I of course set my own targets, to always make a good account of myself, and be ready for whenever I am called upon.

“There were some moments in the game I will analyse, where I did well and what I could have done better for the team, but as a whole I think we can take encouragement in what we did on the weekend and go against for West Ham.”
