Young goalkeeper James Holden has completed a season-long loan move to York Road

19-year old goalkeeper James Holden has completed paperwork on a season-long loan move to Maidenhead United.

The young stopper was part of Veljko Paunovic’s senior squad of players who were preparing for the new campaign in Scotland only last week and he will now join the Magpies for a season of competitive football in the National League.

Holden joined the Royals in the second year of an Academy scholarship in September 2019 and last season enjoyed his first year as a professional at Reading, impressing between the posts for our Under-23s.

He ended the season with a short loan stint at Maidenhead United, keeping a clean sheet at Yeovil in only his second appearance for the club before helping Alan Devonshire’s side finish the season strongly with a 4-1 away win at Boreham Wood.

Having put pen to paper on a new contract with the club in the summer, Holden joined Rafael and Luke Southwood as one of three goalkeepers to train with the first team squad in sunny St Andrews.

Now he looks forward to the challenge of the National League as the Magpies begin their 2021-22 campaign with a long trip to Halifax on Saturday 21st August before welcoming Dover Athletic to York Road the following weekend.

We would like to wish James the very best of luck during his season on loan with Maidenhead United.
